[Georgia Tech | Media & Modeling II | Professor: Emilio Hernandez]
The final assignment for Media & Modeling II required a re-creation of an architectural project anywhere around the world. Through an analysis of the building design and its respective systems, each student had to reverse engineer the building and create a Grasshopper script that would produce a replica as close to the original project as possible. I chose to re-create the Shanghai Theater.
The Shanghai Theater is located in Shanghai, China. More specifically, it is located in the Bund Financial District, a newly developed urban center along the Hunagpu River that was designed as a collaboration project between Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio. The theater is a three story, 4,000 sq ft cultural arts center that houses several programmatic elements such as an auditorium, and several exhibition and event halls. However, the main draw to the building, and what contributes to its uniqueness, is its facade; a multi-layered kinetic facade made of bronze tubes that move seamlessly throughout the day. Through unique as a static feature, the movement of the pipes makes the building stand out from those around it, as its character corresponds to the programmatic elements of the project.
